Unleashing the full potential of Europe's electricity grids

powered by innovative grid technologies

Innovative Grid Technologies

CurrENT is the voice of innovative grid technologies in Europe. Our members are taking Europe’s power network to the next level, developing and supplying innovative grid technologies that can unleash the full potential of Europe’s electricity grid.

Increase capacity of the existing grid

Innovative grid technologies allow for a better use of the existing grid, increasing the capacity of the grid quickly, at a lower cost to consumers.

Mass uptake of renewables

Innovative grid technologies maintain the grid’s reliability with a higher penetration of renewables, reducing curtailment and facilitating the mass uptake of renewables.

A pan-European supergrid

Innovative high-capacity conductors can transport the vast renewable resources across the European continent, in order to fully decarbonise the European economy.

Grids at the heart of a competitive Europe

Powerful electricity grids are the backbone of European competitiveness, affordability, and clean industrialisation. However, using conventional technologies alone will not deliver results quickly enough. Falling behind on grid infrastructure is already causing significant curtailment of renewables, resulting in billions of euros in costs for European consumers every year.

Innovative grid technologies are essential to achieving Europe’s competitiveness and climate ambitions. They increase the efficiency and capacity of the existing grid and facilitate operating a grid with a much higher penetration of renewables. New transmission and distribution technologies with five to ten times the transfer capacity of conventional technologies will be critical to planning a grid that is capable of supporting a fully decarbonised European economy by 2050.

Based on projections from CurrENT’s study with Compass Lexecon, Prospects for Innovative Power Grid Technologies, the deployment of these technologies could increase Europe’s network capacity by 20-40% by 2040. This represents significant gains for Europe, which must electrify at an unprecedented scale to achieve its climate and competitiveness targets.

The time to act is now. We must accelerate the deployment of innovative grid technologies to unleash the full potential of Europe’s electricity grids and secure a sustainable and competitive future for Europe.

CurrENT’s values

Collaboration, optimization and innovation

CurrENT is the voice of innovative grid technology providers in Europe. CurrENT envisions a future where the evolution of Europe’s electricity grids is driven by collaboration, optimization, and above all, innovation. CurrENT is driven by its members who are all committed to the same goal, achieving Europe’s climate ambitions and realising a decarbonised energy future that is affordable for consumers through the efficient deployment of innovative grid technologies.

“Europe is still only at the very beginning of the energy transition. In less than two decades, the power system will need to undergo bigger changes than it has seen in the last 150 years. CurrENT empowers technology providers to help Europe unleash the full potential of its electricity grids.”
